I can see clearly now…

After clouds of racism pass by (leaving behind those that twist and chase, leave trails, then fade without the fanfares accorded to proper rain storms)

After TV’s brainwashing of chocolate-skinned girls like my pretty sister (Mom always talked about how beautiful she was and how gorgeous were her big brown eyes, big like a sweet cow, she’d say)

After the news reports of White people fighting for their children’s schools to continue excluding kids like us (who rode together in the back of the yellow school bus, joking in our attempts to be just as capable of stereotyping as our White schoolmates that “Whitey thinks it’s summer cause the sun came out”)

After the honest mistake of the kindergarten teacher saying the kids with my color skin were White (and Mom, asking what I’d learned at school that day, was horrified to hear I’d deduced…
